Toe Taps and Tick-Tocks
Why this drill works
Ball mastery is a volume business. A player who takes 300 touches per practice will out-develop one who takes 60, regardless of how clever the drills are, and this circuit is the cheapest touch-volume machine there is: no cones, no lines, no setup, and every player working every second. Toe taps build the light feet that every other skill sits on; tick-tocks build the inside-of-foot contact that becomes passing and receiving. The counting ritual matters more than it looks: shared counting sets a group rhythm, keeps effort honest, and turns a technical drill into something that feels like a team activity.
How to coach it
Do the circuit with them for the first month; a coach doing toe taps badly and laughing about it gives permission to struggle. Keep blocks short and rests real, because quality collapses when little legs tire. Track speed-round scores on your phone if your group likes numbers; nothing motivates a nine-year-old like beating last week’s 41. Send the circuit home: it is the rare drill that transfers perfectly to a living room, and the home version is where mastery actually accumulates.

Setup
Spread players across any flat area with two yards of personal space each, every player with a ball. No cones are needed. Position yourself where everyone can see your feet, because this drill is taught almost entirely by demonstration. Show the two touches slowly: toe taps are alternating light touches on top of the ball with the sole, staying on the balls of the feet like a boxer; tick-tocks push the ball side to side between the insides of the feet, ankles locked, knees bent. Establish the counting ritual immediately: the whole group counts touches out loud together, which sets the rhythm and keeps everyone honest.
How to run it
- Block 1, toe taps: 20 touches counted aloud together at learning pace, rest 15 seconds, then 20 more trying to stay lighter and quicker. The ball should barely move; feet dance, ball sleeps.
- Block 2, tick-tocks: 20 side-to-side touches counted aloud, rest, then 20 more. The ball travels no wider than the hips; wide tick-tocks are lost tick-tocks.
- Block 3, speed rounds: 15 seconds of maximum-count toe taps, each player counting their own score silently, then announcing it. Repeat once trying to beat the score. Same for tick-tocks.
- Block 4, combinations: coach calls patterns like FOUR AND FOUR (four toe taps into four tick-tocks, repeating). Switching between touch types without the ball escaping is the real skill.
- Block 5, eyes up: players continue the combination while calling out how many fingers the coach holds up. Heads rise off the ball for the first time.
- Finish with a one-minute free round: any touches, any pattern, invent something. Ask one or two players to show their invention to the group.
What success looks like
Touch counts climb week over week (track the 15-second speed scores if you like numbers), the ball stays inside the player's shadow during every block, and by the eyes-up round most players can keep a pattern going while reading your fingers.

Common mistakes
- Standing flat-footed, which makes every touch late. The boxer image fixes it: bounce lightly between touches.
- Stomping toe taps that squash the ball away. The touch is a tap, not a step; demonstrate the difference audibly, since good taps are nearly silent.
- Watching the ball forever. That is fine for week one, but the fingers-up round exists to break the habit before it sets.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Slow everything to half speed, allow a hand-on-partner for balance during toe taps, and shorten blocks to 10 touches. Success in week one is any continuous rhythm at all.
Harder: Add sole rolls and outside-inside touches to the menu, run combinations to a coach's clap rhythm that changes tempo, or do the entire circuit with the weak foot leading.
Adapt it to your team
Small roster: Works with two players; make every block a head-to-head count battle and let the winner pick the next pattern.
Large roster: Scales to 24 with no changes beyond spacing checks; put your strongest performer front and center as a second demonstration body.
Limited space: This is the most space-efficient drill in soccer: a bedroom fits it. Indoors, ban the speed rounds near furniture and keep the free round controlled.
Limited equipment: Fewer balls than players: pairs share, alternating blocks, with the resting partner counting and judging the other's touches. Rolled socks work at home.
Safety
The main risk is players drifting into each other during speed rounds, so re-check spacing before block 3. On wet grass, toe taps get slippery; slow the tempo and warn about planting the standing foot. See the safety page for general guidance.
