Outlet and Go Transition
Why this drill works
Youth teams score their easiest baskets in transition, yet most treat the fast break as a talent that some rosters have rather than a pattern any roster can learn. This loop teaches it as choreography with three named jobs, which is exactly the level of structure nine-to-fourteen-year-olds can execute at full speed. The staged defenders matter enormously: the chaser converts every technical standard into survival, and the protector converts the pattern into decisions, so by the end the trio is not running a drill, it is playing basketball’s most valuable four seconds on purpose.
How to coach it
Rotate jobs relentlessly, because the pattern only becomes team knowledge when every player has been the rebounder, the outlet, and the runner many times. Coach the first second hardest, the rip-and-outside-turn plus the instant outlet, since breaks die at birth far more often than at the rim. Use named races to fix sprint effort; nothing motivates a wide-lane sprint like hearing you beat the ball down the floor. And once the pattern holds, call it in scrimmages by its drill name; a team that hears OUTLET AND GO and organizes itself in mid-play has turned practice into identity, which is the entire point.

Setup
Three-player groups at one baseline: a REBOUNDER at the basket, an OUTLET at the free-throw-line-extended wing area (cone marks it), and a RUNNER at half court on the far sideline (second cone). Walk the loop once with a demonstration trio: the coach tosses the ball off the backboard, the rebounder grabs it and turns OUTSIDE (away from the middle, protecting the ball) to hit the outlet with a strong two-hand pass; the outlet catches facing up the floor and immediately pushes the dribble up the sideline; the runner sprints the far lane ahead of the ball and receives the pass at the far free-throw line for a layup; the rebounder trails the play down the middle. Name the three jobs in three words each, because roles are the pattern's skeleton: rebound and pitch, catch and push, run and finish.
How to run it
- Stage 1, dry loop: groups run the full pattern at three-quarter speed with no defense, finishing the layup, then resetting along the sidelines while the next trio starts. Three loops per trio, rotating jobs every loop so all three roles get learned.
- Stage 2, grade the outlet: same loops with the coach standing at the outlet spot narrating the two standards: the rebounder's outside turn (turning into the middle gets the ball stolen at every level of basketball) and the outlet's catch already facing up-court, no pivot delay.
- Stage 3, grade the runner: the sprint lane goes wide to the sideline then cuts to the rim at the far free-throw line, not a diagonal drift into the ball's path. Runners who beat the ball down the floor get named; the sprint is the play's engine.
- Stage 4, add a chaser: one defender starts under the original basket and chases the play the moment the rebound is secured. Now the loop has a clock, and every slow turn, soft pass, or lazy sprint gets exposed by footsteps.
- Stage 5, add a protector: a second defender waits at the far basket, so the trio finishes 3v1 against a set defender plus the chaser arriving, and must choose: runner finishes, outlet pulls up, or trail rebounder gets it back. Live decisions, still inside the pattern.
- Finish with transition races: two trios run mirrored breaks on each sideline simultaneously off the coach's double toss, first clean layup wins, defended rounds alternate in. Loops become racing, racing becomes habit.
What success looks like
Rebounds turn outside automatically, outlet passes arrive strong and chest-high within a second of the rebound, runners consistently beat the ball past half court, layups get finished at speed off the pattern, and against the chaser the whole loop completes before the footsteps arrive. Trios begin calling their own jobs at the toss.

Common mistakes
- The rebounder turning into the middle of the floor where imaginary (and later real) hands live. The outside-turn standard is non-negotiable from loop one, and stage 4's chaser turns the lesson into experience.
- The outlet catching, landing, pivoting, thinking, then dribbling: three beats where the break allows one. Coach the catch itself, feet already open up-court, because the delay lives in the feet, not the mind.
- Runners jogging a diagonal into traffic instead of sprinting the wide lane. The wide lane feels longer and is faster; racing a named teammate down the sideline once makes the case better than geometry ever will.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Shorten to half-court loops finishing at the near free-throw line gate, use a coach as a permanent, accurate outlet passer, and keep everything undefended while the roles get learned.
Harder: Add a fourth trailer for secondary options, require the finish within six seconds of the rebound on a counted clock, defend with two chasers, or demand weak-hand finishes at the rim.
Adapt it to your team
Small roster: Six players run two trios alternating loops with the resting trio retrieving; jobs rotate every loop so six players cover all roles twice in ten minutes.
Large roster: Fifteen players run five trios in a continuous belt, one launching as the previous clears half court, with a parent under the far basket managing ball returns to the baseline.
Limited space: A half court runs the whole pattern at two-thirds scale: rebound, outlet at the elbow extended, runner from the half-court line finishing at the same basket the ball started from, after the outlet dribbles a wide arc.
Limited equipment: Two balls keep the belt moving; cones for the outlet and runner spots can be floor tape or shirts, and pinnies matter only when both defenders enter.
Safety
Full-court sprints with heads turned for passes demand clean lanes: loose balls get walked off the floor immediately, and the reset paths run along the sidelines, never back through the middle where the next trio is breaking. Chasers pursue the ball, not bodies, with no reaching through a finisher at the rim. Winded players rotate out before form fails, since transition drills hide fatigue inside excitement.
