Why this drill works
Every rotation of team volleyball offers somewhere to hide, and developing players find it. The skinny singles court abolishes hiding: every first touch, every set, every decision belongs to one player, which multiplies meaningful contacts beyond any team format and quietly builds the all-skills competence that positions later specialize FROM. The narrowness is the design genius, removing the wide chase that makes full-court singles impossible for kids and leaving a game of control, depth, and reading, the three things young players otherwise learn last.
How to coach it
Sequence cooperation before competition every session, because the self-touch habits form when pairs share a goal and erode when winning offers shortcuts; the constraint rounds re-anchor them. Coach almost entirely through the two mantras and the lane rotations, letting close matchups generate the effort. Watch first-touch height as your single diagnostic, since everything downstream depends on it. And promote the format beyond practice deliberately, because two teammates, one ball, and a rope is a complete volleyball education happening on a Saturday, and this drill is how they find that out.

Equipment
- 1 volleyball per court

Setup
Tape or cone the net's width into narrow lanes, each 8-10 feet wide and roughly 15 feet deep per side, one player per side per lane. The format's rule set, explained with a demonstration rally: players may use up to THREE touches on their own side, all by themselves (typically pass to self, set to self, send over), and the ball must cross inside the lane's tape lines. Play starts with a free-ball toss entry, rallies score one point, games to five, and then rotate opponents along the lanes. State the constraint that makes it training rather than paddle-ball: sends over the net must be legal volleyball contacts, a set, a standing down ball, or a forearm pass, no catching, no throwing. The narrow lane is the teacher: deep and short exist, but wide does not, so rallies live on control and depth instead of chasing.
How to run it
- Games 1-2, cooperative entry: pairs RALLY rather than compete, counting consecutive over-the-net sends as a pair, using all three self-touches every possession. The three-touch habit gets grooved while nobody is trying to win yet; pairs chase their cooperative record.
- Teaching beat, the self-set: pause to name the format's core skill: the first touch goes UP to yourself, high and soft, buying time to move under it and choose the send. A first touch that flies flat forward leaves the player nothing; the phrase is UP FIRST, DECIDE SECOND.
- Games 3-4, competitive rallies: scoring begins, games to five, rotating winners up the lanes and others down after each game so matchups stay close. The narrow court immediately rewards depth: balls to the back tape are hard to return with control, and players discover it without being told.
- Teaching beat two, the short-deep game: demonstrate the two-shot combination the lane allows, a deep send that pushes the opponent back followed by a soft short one over the net. Deception enters, and with it reading: watch the opponent's position BEFORE choosing the send.
- Games 5-6, constraint rounds, one per game: MUST use all three touches every possession; or FOREARM sends only; or the first touch must be called (MINE, even alone, building the habit until it is unconditional).
- Finish with the ladder final: the top lane plays a spotlight game to three while other lanes finish their matches and gather; the whole group watches the last rally, and the day's deep-short combination gets pointed out when it inevitably decides a point.
What success looks like
First touches go up-to-self reliably rather than flying forward, three-touch possessions become the default rather than the constraint, sends target the deep tape and the short zone deliberately, players move to be under their own second touch, and rallies lengthen in the cooperative games while ending purposefully in the competitive ones.

Common mistakes
- One-touch tennis, batting every ball straight back over. The three-touch constraint round exists as the cure, and the cooperative record games make self-touching feel normal before winning tempts shortcuts.
- First touches sprayed flat and forward, leaving the player chasing their own ball. UP FIRST is the drill's mantra; grade the height of first touches out loud for a game and the shape corrects.
- Standing center-court sending everything to the opponent's hands. The short-deep teaching beat converts nice rallies into volleyball; players who never vary depth need the combination assigned as their personal constraint for a game.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Allow a catch on the first touch with a self-toss restart for developing players easing in, widen lanes slightly, lower the net or use a rope, and keep all games cooperative for the youngest groups in this age band.
Harder: Shrink lanes to 6 feet, require the send off exactly the third touch every time, add jump-set or down-ball-only send rounds, or play doubles rules in the same skinny lane where partners must alternate touches.
Adapt it to your team
Small roster: Two players and one lane is a complete session, and the format is a superb two-player practice for teammates meeting outside team time; assign it as exactly that.
Large roster: Sixteen players fill eight lanes along one net (or four lanes with a challenge queue per lane playing winner-stays), with the ladder rotation keeping matchups honest across the width.
Limited space: One lane over a rope between two chairs runs in a driveway or backyard; depth shrinks gracefully, and the self-touch skills care nothing for ceiling height outdoors.
Limited equipment: One ball per two players, floor tape or four cones per lane, and any net-height barrier; the entire format was arguably invented on courts with none of the proper equipment.
Safety
Adjacent lanes share sidelines, so the BALL call freezes neighboring rallies when a ball crosses lanes, and players never chase into another lane mid-rally. Net posts anchor the outermost lanes at safe distance. The format's intensity is cardiovascular, since one player covers everything; rotate rest through the queue or between games before quality and footwork decay.
