Mikan Drill
Why this drill works
Most points in youth basketball are scored within five feet of the rim, and most misses there are misses of touch, not contests: balls banged off glass by one strong hand while the other hand hides. The Mikan attacks exactly this, pairing the footwork pattern that organizes every close finish with equal-volume work for both hands, at a rep rate nothing else matches; a smooth loop produces a finish every three seconds. Seventy years of players have kept it alive because the zone it trains never stops being where games are decided.
How to coach it
Teach the cross-body coordination patiently in the no-ball stage, since outside-foot-inside-hand fights every beginner’s wiring and rushing it bakes in the flat same-side finish. Then coach almost entirely by sound: name the quiet backboard as the standard once, and correct with one word, SOFTER. Guard the pendulum’s position under the rim and the honesty of the alternating hands, the two places kids drift. Keep timed records visible across the season, and assign the drill home relentlessly; a kid with a hoop and a Mikan habit finishes their way onto every team they ever try out for.

Equipment
- 1 basketball per basket group
- 1 hoop
Setup
One player under the basket with a ball; groups of two or three per hoop rotate on a made-basket count or a time interval. Demonstrate the loop slowly, because the Mikan is a rhythm before it is a shot: start on the right side of the rim, step with the LEFT foot toward the hoop while raising the ball with the RIGHT hand, and lay it softly off the backboard's near corner; catch the ball out of the net BEFORE it touches the floor, and in the same motion step across to the left side with the RIGHT foot, finishing with the LEFT hand off the left corner of the board. The pattern repeats: outside foot steps, inside hand finishes, ball never touches the floor, body stays under the rim like a pendulum. Name the target explicitly: the top corner of the small square on the backboard, the softest window in basketball.
How to run it
- Stage 1, no ball: the footwork pendulum alone, five slow crossings each way with the arms miming the finish. Left foot with right hand, right foot with left hand; the cross-body coordination is the hard part and deserves its own reps.
- Stage 2, catch-and-pause loop: the full drill, but players may pause after each catch to reset their feet. Ten makes, alternating sides, counting aloud. Softness is the grade: the ball should kiss the square, not bang it.
- Stage 3, continuous Mikan: the pauses disappear and the loop flows, catch to step to finish, at whatever pace stays smooth. Sets of 10 makes; the group counts each player's set together, which turns a solo grind into a shared metronome.
- Stage 4, reverse Mikan: the same loop finished on the far side of the rim with a reverse layup, using the rim as protection. Same footwork, new geometry; expect a mess for a session and say so.
- Stage 5, timed sets: makes in 30 seconds, personal records tracked week over week. Speed enters only after smoothness, and the record chase makes maintenance reps self-motivating for years.
- Finish with the pressure ladder: each player needs three consecutive soft makes, alternating hands, to exit the drill, with the group counting. The last player finishing gets the loudest support, by rule.
What success looks like
The ball stops touching the floor mid-loop, weak-hand finishes soften until they match the strong hand's touch, the footwork pendulum runs without conscious thought (visible when players can talk while doing it), and timed-set records climb across weeks. The backboard sound is the audit: quiet is correct.

Common mistakes
- Same-side foot and hand (right foot rising with right hand), which flattens the shot and the rhythm. The no-ball stage exists for this; return to it the moment the coordination slips.
- Power finishes banged off the glass. The Mikan trains touch, not force; the quiet-backboard standard is audible from across the gym and self-enforcing once named.
- Drifting away from the rim with each rep until layups become runners. The pendulum stays under the basket; a cone placed a step outside each block can fence wanderers back in.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Allow one dribble between catches for players not ready for the airborne catch, lower to an 8-foot rim when available, and count attempts rather than makes for the newest finishers.
Harder: Add a tap drill variation (backboard taps replacing catches), require jump-stop gathers before each finish, run it with a weighted or slightly larger ball, or ban the backboard for rim-only touch sets.
Adapt it to your team
Small roster: One player and one hoop is the native configuration; this is the definitive take-home basketball drill and should be assigned as nightly homework with the timed-set record as the hook.
Large roster: Twelve players split across however many baskets exist, three per hoop rotating on ten-make sets, with the resting players counting and auditing backboard softness.
Limited space: Only the space under one rim is needed; low-ceiling driveways with mounted hoops work fine, and stage 1's footwork can be practiced literally anywhere, including a bedroom.
Limited equipment: One ball and one hoop, full stop; a smaller youth ball is actually preferable for young hands learning soft touch.
Safety
Eyes live on the backboard while feet share space with rebounders, so one player in the lane at a time per hoop; waiting players hold the block areas outside the pendulum's path. Fatigued Mikans get sloppy and ankles pay for it, so cap continuous sets at 10-15 makes with real rests, and wipe sweat spots off the lane between rotations. See the safety page for general guidance.
